Sword World 2.0
Or, ソード・ワールドRPG 2.0 (SW2.0) as it is known in the original Japanese, is one of the pioneer Japanese languange role-playing-game systems. And it happens to be just one of the things I specifically went to Tokyo earlier this year for:

This should take me a while to translate to a point where it’s actually playable, but hey, what’s another hobby? :D

Interestingly enough, I had quite a bit of a hard time looking for the books, because the first time I saw the book, it was printed in a large filo format, rather than the current handy three-part paperback. I had looked for the large hard-cover all over Akihabara, and was about to give up when Great Cthulhu showed the way, literally. Simply put, I was looking at the RPG section, which contained oddly enough, Japanese language editions of GURPS, D&D and the Call of Cthlhu RPGs to no avail, when suddenly stack of books collapsed and dropped the Call of Cthulhu rulebook onto a small paperback stack. And when I picked up the dropped book what did I see? Sword World 2.0. Ha!

And so, I got tagged. On Facebook, of all places. Anyhoo, here goes:

ANGER:
Q: Who did you last get angry with?
A: An angry drunk, who insulted my friends, my family and called me of all things, a coward who’s too pussy to start a fight with him. And to top it off, he suddenly headbutted me and smashed my nose. I really, really, really wanted to go Fiore on his ass… but the mission came first.

Q: Weapon of choice?
A: Swift kick to the nether regions.

Q: Would you hit a member of the opposite sex?
A: If I have to.

Q: How about of the same sex?
A: Oh yes….

Q: Who was the last person who got really angry at you?
A: Probably my wife.

Q: Pet peeve?
A: Stupidity.

Q: Do you keep grudges?
A: I’ll forgive, but not forget.

SLOTH

Q: What is the one thing you’re supposed to do daily that you haven’t done in a long time?
A: Go jogging. My job sucks.

Q: Latest time you ever woke up?
A: 6pm.

Q: Name a person you’ve been meaning to contact, but haven’t
A: Mom.

Q: What is the last lame excuse you made?
A: Who? Me? I never!

Q: How many times did you hit the SNOOZE button on your alarm clock today?
A: Three times. The last one is my dogs barking because they need to go for a walk…

GLUTTONY
Q: What is your OVERPRICED beverage of choice?
A: Coke from Mac’s. At a cost price of $0.08 per regular drink, inclusive of cup, lid, straw, ice and actual drink, for a sale price of $1.20. I know, because I’ve worked for the Scotsman for four years.

Q: Meat eaters-White or dark meat? Vegetarian-Vegan or not?
A: My motto is: “Never Refuse Food”.

Q: Greatest amount of alcohol you’ve had in one sitting/outing/event?
A: Two bottles of wine, two beers, half a bottle of whiskey, half a bottle of vodka and a Graveyard, but not in that order. There was probably more after that, but I don’t remember…

Q: Used a professional diet company?
A: Huh? Whatzzat?

Q: Do you have an issue with your weight?
A: No.

Q: Sweet,Spicy or Salty foods?
A: See motto above.

LUST
Q: How many people have you seen naked (not counting movies/family)?
A: I plead the Fifth.

Q: How many people have seen YOU naked (not counting family/Doctors)?
A: I plead the Fifth

Q: Have you ever caught yourself staring at the chest/crotch of a member of the gender of choice during a normal conversation?
A: Yes.

Q: Have you “Done it”?
A: Yes.

Q: What is your favorite body part on a person of your gender of choice?
A: I look at the overall package. But if I have to pick, I’d go with nice hair.

Q: Have you ever been propositioned by a prostitute?
A: Nope. Been accosted by pimps many times though.

GREED
Q: What’s your guilty pleasure store?
A: Bags and Books.

Q: Rich or Famous?
A: Rich. It may not buy me happiness, but it buys things that make me happy.

Q: Accept a boring job if it means MEGABUCKS?
A: Hell, yes.

PRIDE
Q: Most proud of what accomplishment?
A: Got my wife to marry me, despite my character flaws and all.

Q: What one thing have you done that your family is most proud of?
A: I have no idea.

Q: Annoyed by finishing in second place?
A: No, so long as I finish.

Q: What’s one thing that you have yet to do but would like to accomplish in your life?
A: Kids.

“FACEBOOK” ENVY
Q: What item (person) of your current FACEBOOK friends would you most want to have for your own?
A: Cheryl & JE’s beautiful old house in Sweden.

Q: Which of your FACEBOOK friends would you want to go on “Trading Spaces” with?

As quoted from wikipedia:

The Bayeux Tapestry (French: Tapisserie de Bayeux) is a 50 cm by 70 m (20 in by 230 ft) long embroidered cloth—not an actual tapestry—which explains the events leading up to the 1066 Norman invasion of England as well as the events of the invasion itself. The Tapestry is annotated in Latin.

In itself interesting reading, especially for those of us in PHEMAS, but I found something else that makes use of the imagery found in the tapestry: The Historic Tale Construction Kit

Bwahahahaha!!

Humor aside though, the write-up on medieval swordsmanship in last sunday’s newspaper has certainly sparked a lot of interest in the society, and I do believe we will have a large influx of new faces at training this weekend. Hopefully, we will find new blood among these who will be passionate about the art and is willing to spend the sweat and the pain to take up swordsmanship as a life-long commitment.

First of all, a big Hello! to the lovely Auri, whom I’ve finally gotten to meet.

Today marks the halfway point of the “Five Days of Fiore” Seminar, and I think I can see the exhaustion and mental overload starting to set in. So far, the seminars that we’ve had has always been over weekends, and stretching one out to five days is a first, not just for PHEMAS back home, but apparently for SESH here as well.

In a bid to keep interest high, Guy injected some humor in today’s session by having us recreate the illustrations in the manuscript ~ it was quite a sight, especially in the Play of Dagger against Swords, we even had Ilkka wear the crown of the Master:

Even I got into the act with the introduction to the play of Zhogo Largo:

In any case the last three days have been both a revision in the source of our Art, and an exploration of how the process of translating the manuscript into actual physical movements is done. In doing so, I believe that many of us have come to a greater understanding and appreciation of how the entire system is interconnected, with the foundation built up form the unarmed sections and evolving through the dagger and sword plays. Tomorrow, we will continue with swords, before going on to polearms.

Now I bid everyone goodnight, and I shall retire to rub my sore and aching muscles before drifting off to restful slumber.

Hyvää yötä!

Singlesticks in the Park

We went to Toa Payoh park, a short 15-minute walk from my home, for our usual Saturday Morning Singlesticks. Ken has a much more detailed description on his blog on the event.

Suffice to say, Ken has made tremendous improvement to his play and and control. Bravo!

Separately, we made a little headway in interpreting Bolognese swordmanship, from the excellent resource by the Order Of The Seven Hearts. It’s much more easier when you have someone to to through the instructions for the play to understand what works and why, rather than trying to muddle through by one’s self!

Saturday Gaming
Saturday afternoon and night is gaming as usual ~ what was unusual was that we tried a new card-game that evening ~ Three Dragon Ante. Highly addictive, it has elements of trick-taking and bluffing, with sudden reversals and other surprises. I foresee that this will probably become a regular at our Saturday night gaming sessions :D

Open Session last night was a real eye-opener. With Ilkka, we were doing many new things, including cutting, abrazare, single-hand techniques, and some conditioning. Of great interest was the concept on the position of strength and leverage (see the elbow, push the elbow!), the relative order of the three joints (wrist, elbow, shoulder) and where to exert said leverage based on what the opponent is trying to do.

Finally, while doing a demo on single-hand techniques, Ilkka put me a lock, with the swords ~ and it was something we could have done right out of abrazare, firmly convincing me that the foundation of Italian Swordsmanship is based on the unarmed techniques of Fiore’s . Get abrazare right, and everything else becomes easier. More foundation training on the basics from now on, I suppose.

After attending O/S for the first time after so long (damned %$#@! work schedule….), I’m all fired up and more enthused about swordsmanship than ever before. On a side note, I think my new diet of just having a vegetarian meal for lunch is working ~ I’ve actually lost about 1kg in the week I’ve gone semi-vegan, and I feel more alert and energetic this whole week. Shall continue and see if I can trim some more.

I have to admit, I’ve been a little jittery ever since the VA shootings a few days ago. Not that I fear that something similar will occur here on our peaceful little island, but rather that the usual blame game of “he’s a loner”, and “it’s all because of those violent video games he plays”.

Why is it that the gaming hobby gets more than it’s fair share of this backlash? Back in the 80’s it was D&D and Satanism, and now it’s Counter Strike or Grand Theft Auto.

Are people simply looking for an easy way out? I read the article by Heather Chaplin, co-author with Aaron Ruby of Smartbomb: The Quest for Art, Entertainment & Big Bucks in the Videogame Revolution, and I realise that this is probably so.

As a culture, we fetishize violence……. The fact is, whether we want to admit it or not, we’re seeped in violence both virtual and real. We don’t just play violent; we are, deep down at our core, violent.

Look at our history. We’ve been waging war every day since manifest destiny first became popular more than a hundred years ago - some above ground like the current war in Iraq, others clandestine…. Just a few years ago, we gave the go ahead to our government for a policy of pre-emptive strike. What is that if not an emphatic endorsement of violence as the prime solution to a given problem?

And as the Virginia Tech shootings reminds us once again, anyone who wants a gun can get one as long as they can pay for it.

Most of us learn how to abstract away the faux-violence of pop culture and to stay numb to the real violence in the world around us. But when one of us does become sick - really sick the way Cho was - perhaps it shouldn’t be so surprising that the sickness manifests itself as a bloody reflection of all the culture showed him.

To blame violent videogames for this, let alone videogames as a medium, is short sighted, hypocritical, absurd, and, frankly, a little desperate. It’s an argument made by people who fear a medium they don’t understand and want a bogeyman more than they want real answers.

- Heather Chaplin

Come to think of it, Cho might not have walked this path of insanity and violence if he had actually been a gamer ~ providing him a safe and suitable outlet for his fustration, and the chance to meet and know people how actually shared this hobby. Who knows, he might have just turned out to be just another nerdy gamer.

Episode 25 ended rather… abruptly. Did the producers run out of funds of something? But all in all, a great season, with very unusual background, great story and creepy atmosphere, this series really creeped me out. Recommended if you’re feeling hot and need a chill down your spine….

New to watch

Lovely Complex
Been reading this best-selling manga for a while now, and it’s finally made it’s way to animated series. The first episode just aired in Tokyo yesterday evening, and I’m waiting for it to be uploaded to youtube… or something :D

Mahou Shojou Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS
Aaaaaaaannnd Season 3 is finally out. From what little I could make out with my limited Japanese, looks like the new season will focus more on the new blood than the old Nanoha/Fate/Hayate combination. We’ll see… in the meantime, the upload quality on youtube sucked, big time.
