The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor
I meant to post this together with the writeup on The Machine Girl, but totally forgot. Well, we caught this third installment of the Mummy franchise, and it was a let-down, after the antics of Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones. I’m not that rabid a fan-boy to piss on the movie simply because Rachel Weisz is not on the cast list this time (in fact I thought that Maria Bello filled her role rather admirably), but despite the exotic locations and exciting action sequences, it still fell flat on the plot. It just simply didn’t feel… epic.

Anyway:
One star for the hilarious pissing contest between father and son when comparing guns.
One star for the adorably cute Yetis.
Half star for the huge undead vs terracotta warriors battle scene.

Total 2.5 / 5 stars

ED from Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu (乃木坂春香の秘密)

Seriously though, for an anime to poke fun of the Akiba-Kei and Otaku sub-culture isn’t entirely new (c.f. Densha Otoko, and NHK ni Yōkoso! (N・H・Kにようこそ)), but it does put a twist in changing the stereotype from the guy to the girl.

Iron Man
Iron Man was a total blast! From the soundtrack to the F/X to the comic scenes to the fast and furious fights, in a totally awesome romp through the Superhero genre. The only thing that jarred came at the end, after the credits rolled ~ why, oh why, did they cast Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury?!? Then again, this probably means that this vision of the Marvel Universe will probably be cast on the Ultimates couch… but why did he mention the “Avenger Initiative”? Will that mean we’ll be seeing a Thor and Captain America movie sometime soon, seeing as Hulk is coming up next?

Other Stuff

Finally went back to training after a 1-month hiatus due to increased workload, and it seems like my conditioning has slipped by quite a bit. This is worrying, as we’re due to head up north to Helsinki in June for training at the mother school ~ looks like additional training is in order. That aside, due to the change in syllabus, and me missing most of the classes last month, I had to skip the current evaluations ~ I don’t really mind, as I think I’m now at a comfortable position of the learning curve, trying to get the basics down perfect before moving on to the advanced stuff. That said, kudos to the rest of the students who worked very hard and were promoted, you guys deserved it!

Guess what we did today? ^_^

I can’t believe that it’s been more than ten years since I first saw the Evangelion series and was totally blown away. This time round though, it was the wifey who was impressed.

The production unit has really put a lot of effort and thought into this remake. The visuals and soudtrack have been beautifully brought from the original TV work to the big screen; words alone cannot describe how good it was ~ run, don’t walk to watch this.

Can’t wait for the next movie in the series to be shown.

Now please excuse me while I go dig up my Utada album :D

What the?!?

Spidey’s Maguire Dons Robotech

Spider-Man star Tobey Maguire will produce and may star in a film based on the classic SF anime Robotech, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Warner Brothers Pictures picked up the rights to Robotech, which features giant robots known as mechas. Maguire is producing through his Maguire Entertainment banner and is eyeing the lead role in what the studio plans as an SF franchise a la Paramount’s hit Transformers.

Drew Crevello also is producing through his Supercool Hollywood BigTime Productions. Craig Zahler has been tapped to write the screenplay.

Robotech was a cartoon series during the 1980s from Harmony Gold USA and Tatsunoko Productions. It was re-edited and re-dialogued to combine three Japanese anime series to give the producers enough episodes to air as a daily syndicated series.

Robotech takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion concerns a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship’s energy source, known as “protoculture,” and the planet’s survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots.

Hell yeah! CGI VF-1 Valkyrie ftw!

Just so you know, I *DO* buy DVDs in support of the anime industry.

And no, this is just a small part of my collection.

*edit*
Oh, and, I don’t buy Odex. The stuff is crap (yes, I admit to contributing to their dwindling sales… because I *DO* get better-quality stuff from the States, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and heck, even direct from Japan), VCDs just don’t have enough space to cram high-quality video data, and I don’t fancy having stacks of VCDs cluttering up my home when a few DVDs will do the job. Not to mention having better box art too.

I’m pissed because I’m so busy at work that I have to miss Open Session Training. *Again*.

And that fustration is compounded by the fact that I can’t even blow off steam by swinging the sword at open sessions.

On the upside, our leathersmith has come through beautifully on the Rapier Frog (the leather thingy that holds the sword to the belt) and pouch. I’ve commissioned him for another frog, this time to hold the Main Gauche, as well as a scabbard for the Liechtenauer. With the amount of work the Society is giving him, we might as well put him on retainer and use him as our armourer!

Cop Shows
Actually caught two police shows last week… Hot Fuzz & Die Hard 4.0

Hot Fuzz was… hilarious to say the least. Typical quirky brit humor and lots of references to pop culture and movie trivia, we enjoyed laughing ourselves silly for this little gem, though the abrupt censorship for the gory scenes were more than a little jarring.

Caught Die Hard 4.0 with Aaron & Mo since wifey refused to watch Die Hard 4.0, citing that she never caught the first one as a reason. But it still was an enjoyable romp; totally updated for the 21st century with hacker terrorists. The action scenes were fast and furious, and featured the typical big explosions and narrow escapes that are the trademark of police officer John MaClane.

Pirates of the Carribean: At World’s End
As usual, Johnny Depp gives an impressive performance as Captain Jack Sparrow, though in this installment his screen time was much reduced. Not as good as the previous outing, probably because the idea is getting stale, but a good show nonetheless.

The King and his men stole the Queen from her bed,
And bound her in her bones.
The seas be ours, and by the powers,
Where we will, we’ll roam.

Yo ho, all together,
Hoist the colours high.
Heave ho, thieves and beggars,
Never shall we die.

Some men have died and some are alive and others sail on the sea –
with the keys to the cage…
and the Devil to pay
we lay to Fiddler’s Green.

The bell has been raised
from its watery grave…
Do you hear its sepulchral tone?
We are a call to all,
pay head the squall
and turn your sail toward home.

Yo ho, all together,
Hoist the colours high.
Heave ho, thieves and beggars,
Never shall we die.

Freedom Episode 3
And after a wait of months, the next episode has arrived ~ lots of high action sequences, but in the end, all the heroes did was escape from EDEN Administration and escape in a rocket for Earth. Duh.

Been listening to the sound track of Samurai Champloo quite extensively these few days, and I’m quite impressed with Japanese Hip-Hop music producer Nujabes.

But in the process of finding out more information about his music, I came across two rather talented gems:

Siik, who did a very impressive mash-up of Amerie’s “1 Thing” and Nujabe’s “Aruarian Dance” from the Samurai Champloo soundtrack (and incidentally, my currently most-listened-to song ~ it reminds me of diving… dunno why though).

And then, there’s Korean Funkyman, who did this:

Spidey 3
We caught Spidey 3 on sunday morning, courtesy of wifey’s company. Overall impression was that it was just a little too long, and yet not enough. With two major villians, the 2.5 hour movie just didn’t have the time to fully develop them, and yet all the emo scenes between Peter Parker and MJ did was just to drag it out painfully.

The high point of the movie for me? Bruce Campbell hamming it up as the French maître d’. He has been doing cameos in every Spidey movie since the first, gotta love the guy :D

This time round it’s a TV drama series with a rather disturbing theme.

Sailor Suit and Machine Gun.

And oh lordy. Soooooo many Haruhi references in this episode too, together with Kanon and FUMOFFU!

Some Changes
I think we may expect to see some changes from the next episode onwards since the directing effort has been changed from Yamamoto Hiroshi to Yasuhiro Takemoto. Not that the show has been bad, but perhaps the higher-ups in Kyoani aren’t too pleased with effort so far.

We’ll see.

Just caught episode 2 of Katsuhiro Otomo’s Freedom_Project. All I can say is that it really gave me the chills, especially since it sticks pretty close to the “hard” science fiction genre that I like. The sight of a blue Earth, rising over the Lunar horizon was…. breath taking, to say the least. Will be looking forward to the next episode, to be released on 25 Apr 07.

Of course, having one of my fave singers perform the OP is a bonus too!

Just caught the RAW of episode 1, and though I only caught about one joke out of every eight or nine, it was still funny, not the usual funny-ha-ha physical comedy of Kyoani’s previous works, but still tickled my funny bone.

For those who caught it as well, but was left wondering where the heck was the ED… well, remember what Konata (seiyū: Aya Hirano) was singing in the Karaoke at the end?

Lucky ☆ Star - ED #1

Uchu Tetsujin Kyodain. XD XD XD

Wait. Does that mean that every episode ED will be a different karaoke of some old cheesy 70’s Super Sentai series??!?

Oh God. What have I gotten myself into?!? T_T||

Anime Updates
Finished Kanon 06 and Ghost Hunt (?)

Kanon Remake
At times happy and funny, and others tragic and heart breaking, this is an emotional roller-coaster of a series. Not going to recommend it to wifey though, or at least, I won’t be anywhere near when she’s watching this or I’ll end up with my Tee-shirt half wet from tears and snot. She’s emo that way. :p

Ghost Hunt
Episode 25 ended rather… abruptly. Did the producers run out of funds of something? But all in all, a great season, with very unusual background, great story and creepy atmosphere, this series really creeped me out. Recommended if you’re feeling hot and need a chill down your spine….

New to watch

Lovely Complex
Been reading this best-selling manga for a while now, and it’s finally made it’s way to animated series. The first episode just aired in Tokyo yesterday evening, and I’m waiting for it to be uploaded to youtube… or something :D

Mahou Shojou Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS
Aaaaaaaannnd Season 3 is finally out. From what little I could make out with my limited Japanese, looks like the new season will focus more on the new blood than the old Nanoha/Fate/Hayate combination. We’ll see… in the meantime, the upload quality on youtube sucked, big time.
