Christmas Treat
We caught Mr Magorium’s Wonder Emporium on Christmas Day, and found it quite enjoyable, although the final chapter felt a little rushed and forced to fit the length of time. The credits at the end were pretty funny though, with the very “creative” titles for the various people who helped make the film. An enjoyable romp for the family.
Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year.

1 John 4, 7-14
Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No-one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. We know that we live in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Saviour of the world.
The Importance of Leverage Control
Saturday, 15 Dec 07 morning was Singlesticks as usual. We met up with a few guys and went at it with the usual gusto, and some important lessons were driven home; most importantly, the necessity of maintaining Leverage Control. To do so, one needs to understand that the blade of the sword is generally divided into two parts; the forte, or the strong, and the foible, or the weak.

1) First, the attacker (Anthony, left) makes a cut to draw the defence of the defender (Faiz Mike, right), who parries.

2) Once contact is made, the attacker takes control of leverage by sliding his blade down to the defender’s foible, while maintaining the contact of the defender’s blade at the attacker’s forte

3) Finally, the attacker thrusts home.

Done correctly, the defender will not be in a position to deflect the thrust as he will not have the leverage. It’s nothing magical, simply a matter of mechanical advantage in the physics of a lever.
Weather was fine today, and since sword class was cancelled, we decided to bring the furkids to the beach for a swim.

Lunch was at Bora Bora, a very doggy friendly place ~ they will provide pet owners with a huge iced-water bowl to keep the furkids cool. Not only that, the food and the service is really excellent, and the beach front view just adds to the plus points for this cool little hang-out.

After a day out playing in the surf and long walks, we all went home and had a nice long nap:

Sunday Night Movie
Went out in the evening and caught The Golden Compass. Great F/X, and pretty good acting, but somehow the plot was just a little too bland for me ~ there wasn’t that grand sense of a sweeping epic or even the fantastic that we got from Stardust. Perhaps I was still a little tired from the beach?
Movies So Bad, It’s Got To Be Good!
I did a double take when I first saw the title; >The Machine Girl ~ thinking that it might be the movie version of 最終兵器彼女 (silly me!), I followed the link…. and this was what I got:
Probably the worst/best to come out of Japan next year, it’s got a girl in Seifuku, Ninjas, Tempura, Drill Bras (!), Revenge, and more blood splatter than a shoot-out at the blood bank. I mean, what more could you want?
The only question is: Is it worth the price of a weekday movie ticket?
Evaluation today, and was probably the toughest I’ve had to do since I started training. We had to do everything from the basics up until our level, but I think I managed to scrape through despite a shaky start ~ haven’t been training enough, obviously.
So now, I’m Novice Fellow. Red Garter and all.
woot!
Audio/Visual Update ‘07 - XIII
Enough moping. Brooding will not return twelve years of my life; in fact, it will only add to the time I have wasted.
Time to… find something else to do.

In Flight Movies
One of the things I look forward to when traveling, especially long distance, is the chance to catch up on movies on the in-flight entertainment system.
The Simpsons Movie was… just like another Simpsons TV episode, only two hours long.
Day Watch was awesome! Can’t wait for the last and concluding part of this trilogy.
Underdog was typical Disney fluff. Forgettable.
