We will be holding a little singlestick fencing session over at the Singapore Botanic Gardens this saturday, 29 Sep 07, from 0830H to 1030H, at the Green Pavilion, just above the food court:

Anybody interested in beating other people up with sticks are welcome to drop by and join us for a little morning exercise :D

All you’ll need is a white tee-shirt, track pants and comfortable shoes. We’ll provide the safety equipment and training…

The routine about a drunk Scotsman inventing golf has been making it’s round in the Society recently; all thanks to me :D

Probably why I took up swordsmanship instead of golf….

A few swordsmen sat down at a table for dinner and beer…

Pork KnucklesThe title could very well be the opening of a joke or some other cautionary tale, but it’s not. Training with the people in the society has made me more appreciative of discipline, determination and hard work. We are not born warriors and berserkers of legendary strength and skill; what we can do now is the result of hours of sweat, pain and mind-numbing drill. But despite the testosterone-laden imagery of muscle-bound jocks grunting and swinging away at each other with swords, the group is a surprisingly intelligent one. The after-training dinner is more often than not laden with witty repartee and illuminating discourse. Which brings me back to the original point….

We went out to Paulaner Bräuhaus for pork knuckles and beer on saturday (figuring it’s almost Oktoberfest and we’re doing a seminar on German Historical Swordsmanship that day to boot!), and the usual dinner conversation flowed… from the merits of German vs Italian swordsmanship, to the philosophical musings of Fredrich Nietzsche, to the history of the Byzantine Empire, to the merits of civic theory in government, the usefulness of Miyamoto Musashi’s Book of Five Rings in today’s environment and the influence of language on culture.

An illuminating night, by any standards, but such is the usual flow of conversation around the dinner table on a PHEMAS training night, or in fact, any night out with this bunch. I am glad to have found them…. and gladder to find they welcomed me as a part of a very special family, geekiness, and random insanity not withstanding.

My arms feel like they’re about to fall off!

Over the last two days under the teaching of Mr Stefan Dieke, we got a taste of German historical swordsmanship, which is a very different animal from the Italian style that we’ve been learning.
Chris and Stefan

For starters, much of the work is done from the arms, and at much closer distances from what we’re used to. This really stresses the arms, as the movements are vastly different from the body-mechanics used in Italian moves that we have slowly built up in our muscle-memory in the course of our training.

However, I must say that the moves are very impressive, with twirls of the sword in a Schielhau that are sure to impress the casual onlooker!
Looks like lightsabre combat, doesn't it?

All in all, a very informative seminar ~ many of us put a lot of energy into it, and promptly collapsed in a tired heap when we had a break….

Finally got around to scanning the local gaming magazine that featured the society recently.

Magazine cover

Despite the rather misleading title of “Gaming IRL”, the interior was actually more-or-less spot on about what we do what we’re about. Do go and pick up a copy (it comes together with the other excellent gaming mag, Game Axis) today!

What the?!?

Spidey’s Maguire Dons Robotech

Spider-Man star Tobey Maguire will produce and may star in a film based on the classic SF anime Robotech, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Warner Brothers Pictures picked up the rights to Robotech, which features giant robots known as mechas. Maguire is producing through his Maguire Entertainment banner and is eyeing the lead role in what the studio plans as an SF franchise a la Paramount’s hit Transformers.

Drew Crevello also is producing through his Supercool Hollywood BigTime Productions. Craig Zahler has been tapped to write the screenplay.

Robotech was a cartoon series during the 1980s from Harmony Gold USA and Tatsunoko Productions. It was re-edited and re-dialogued to combine three Japanese anime series to give the producers enough episodes to air as a daily syndicated series.

Robotech takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion concerns a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship’s energy source, known as “protoculture,” and the planet’s survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots.

Hell yeah! CGI VF-1 Valkyrie ftw!

Transform *this*!

Was out walking the dogs a few days ago, and I came across a pet basket (from Ikea, by the looks of it) dumped at the bottom of a nearby block of flats.

Tess gave me a soulful look at that point in time and looked rather pointedly at the basket. I got the hint, and so brought it back, cleaned it up and reused it.

New BasketAll comfy

She looks happy now… except when Stanley decides kick her out and use it for himself….

Do your bit for the environment, ok? Even my dogs agree.

We did a demo for the local swords and replica weaponry importer, Caesers, during their Hanwei Event at the National Library on 8 Sep.

The event went off very well, and I think we managed to give many of those who turned up a better understanding on the history and appreciation of Western Martial Arts.

Evaluations are over for our swordsmanship class, and so traditionally we’ll take a three week break from our usual structured lessons and do some new things. Usually, that involves conditioning exercises, but today we had an introduction to Singlesticks and historical fencing with the rapier.

It was fun, and very different from our usual longsword classes, and what was interesting was that we were allowed to organise a little singlestick tournament after the lesson was over:
Anthony vs Andrew

Real fun stuff ~ I hope we can get more people involved; this really trains reflexes, as well as aggression.

I was doing some research and further reading on Fiore’s manuscript, and I came across this gem on the AMMEA website about the Posta de finestra:

Posta di finestra

The posta de finestra or guard of the window has occassionally been referred to as the “holy shit guard“. The reason for this less than eloquent name for this guard was….. that this guard can be deployed quickly as a result of being surprised and achieving this guard position as a reactionary movement and often was preceded with a verbalized “holy sh…

Funny guys, the folks over at AMMEA are :D

I am in pain. After two days of very through training with Ilkka, I’ve come to the conclusion that I am but a weekend warrior. The man is a monster, his energy knows no limits, his flexibility puts acrobats to shame. And even though we tried to slow him down by putting about 16 kilos of armour on him, he’s still just as fast and strong, and continued to do push-ups and other exercises *BETTER* than us.
Ilkka in armourGroup Photo

Still, it was a very insightful seminar, and we learned a great deal, especially in daga and abazare plays. He also went into much depth about the basic guards of the longsword, and the variations of the plays from Fiore’s mauscript. Ilkka really deserves the title of “scholar”, in every sense of the word as his presentation on the various treatise after the seminar showed. There is a great deal to think through, so I’ll chew on it for a while for now before I write anymore about it.

On a side note, E-Lynn’s historical kit is finally ready. And wonder of wonders, it surprisingly looked like a Jedi Padawan’s outfit too!
Historical kitJedi Padawan?

Conincidentally, Chris brought his FX light sabre along yesterday, and so we decided to play a prank on Greg (him being a great Star Wars fan) by having E-Lynn take the sword salute before class starts using the light sabre. The resulting expression on his face was… priceless :D

Finally, we took and passed our evaluation yesterday, and are now full Apprentices. The road to swordsmanship just got a lot harder, I should guess.

The Compagnia Della Spada also grew, and we welcome into the ranks four more members of the company:
